Gujarat’s first labour union, Majoor Mahajan Sangh was founded to protect the rights of the Ahmedabad Textile Mill Workers. This historical organisation has its office near the Bhadra Fort.
Pioneer of the women’s labour movement in India, Anasuya Sarabhai, helped organise textile workers in Ahmedabad during the 1914 strike.
She was also involved in a month-long strike in 1918 and organised mass meetings during a strike called by Mahatma Gandhi. She founded the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association (Majoor Mahajan Sangh), India's oldest union of textile workers and Gujarat’s first organised labour union.
The present building was erected after independence but has historical photographs like one of Mahatma Gandhi with Anasuya Sarabhai. A mural depicts Mahatma Gandhi leading a satyagraha of workers.
Majoor Mahajan Sangh is one of the leading organizations to provide labour law assistance, especially in the era of Industrialisation in India, when Ahmedabad was famous for its mills and called as the ‘Manchester of the East’. They provide lawyer services to labourers and stand for the injustice faced by them.
