Sardar Patel Bhavan, A Block, Dhanapith, is part of the campus used by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The building was erected in 1885 largely using limestone as the construction material. It has an impressive façade with arches and pillars.
The building has historical associations with prominent people like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Narottam Zaveri and Daman Patel.
The municipality of Ahmedabad came into existence in 1885 when the British Government nominated Ranchhodlal Chhotalal as its first president. The first elected president of the municipality was Rao Bahadur Bhaishankar Nanabhai. Vallabhbhai Patel, better known as Sardar Patel, became the third president.
In 1935, Ahmedabad Municipal celebrated the 100th anniversary. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation came into existence in 1950 and the designation of the Mayor was formed instead of President. Sheth Chinubhai Chimanlal had the honor of being the last president and the first Mayor.
The administrative building of the corporation was named as 'Sardar Patel Bhavan' and the central hall of Municipal Corporation was named as 'Gandhi Hall'.
The building is located in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation campus in Dhanapith. The façade and corridors inside are worth seeing. There are plans to open a museum in the building.
At present, Heritage Department of AMC and Ahmedabad World Heritage City Trust are located in this wing.
