Ratanpol
Ratanpol is a bustling market where people come to buy a variety of fabrics and garments, including special occasion wear like bridal dresses, chaniya choli and formal clothing. This market is also part of Zaveri Vad, literally cluster of jewellers.
Ratanpol, also spelt Ratan Pol, follows the urban planning pattern of Ahmedabad’s walled city where main roads run through the centre of the city and subsidiary streets have specialised markets. Ratanpol occupies streets and lanes connecting two thoroughfares of the walled city, Gandhi Road and Relief Road. However, before it became a cloth market Ratanpol was largely a residential area and many 'pol' with traditional old houses can be entered through the market streets of Ratanpol. In the 17 century it was called Kothari Pathak and now it is part of Zaveri Vad.
This is a market with wide-ranging shops from those selling branded clothes to ones that specialise in inexpensive garments. Many big chains with multiple outlets in the city have their first store or flagship store in Ratanpol.
This area is largely the residence of Jain jeweller families, called Zaveris, and a number of Jain temples called 'derasars' can be seen in the Waghan Pol and Shambavnath Pol leading off the main street of Ratanpol.
