It is named after Cemetery (smashan) a Hindu cremation ground where dead bodies are brought to be burnt on a pyre. Masania Hanuman came from samshaniya Hanuman. This temple was located on the river of sabarmati which runs through by this temple 600 years ago. As per hindu rituals the Cemetery (shmashana) is said to be the abode of ghosts & evil spirits place therefore this temple was built on sabarmati river. Today this temple is situated in Manek Chowk area near food market.
