Sarangpur is one of the busiest areas of the city, located near the railway station. Some of Ahmedabad’s largest cloth markets like Sindhi Market and New Cloth Market are also near Sarangpur Darwaja.
The need for an extension of the walled city of Ahmedabad was felt as the city expanded under the reign of its founder Sultan Ahmed Shah. The second fort was completed in the 1480s by Sultan Mahmud Begada. One of the gates of this fort is the Sarangpur Darwaja.
Sarangpur Gate lies near the Sindhi Market and other cloth markets of Ahmedabad. With doors of iron-plated timber, this is a gateway of three stone arches twenty-six feet high and fifteen broad with a roofed platform that could hold three guns. Many of the pols of Khadia with their fine havelis can also be visited near this gate.

The historic darwajas of Ahmedabad stand proudly upright, marking the boundaries of the old walled city of Ahmedabad. Being part of the public infrastructure of the city, they are open to visitor during all hours of the day.
