Sewa ni Haveli is a fine specimen of Ahmedabad’s old heritage houses. This haveli has been restored and converted into Design Sewa.
The haveli was built during British times. It was taken over by Sewa Cooperative Federation and now houses the marketing outlet of the artisan members of this cooperative.
This is the centre for activities of Design Sewa that provides design intervention and solutions for artisans and Sewa Kalkruti that provides the marketing solutions for their handicrafts. The haveli was damaged during the 2001 earthquake. Sewa undertook the restoration and opened their outlet here in 2014.
Located in a three-storey building with stuccowork, decorative balconies and carved wooden pillars.
Inside the haveli are various workshops where you may get to see artisans at work on handiwork like block printing, embroidery and patchwork.
Bandhani tie-dye, puppets, badla-work and crochet are some of the other crafts promoted by Sewa Kalakruti. Garments, home linen and accessories are also sold here.
Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is a very important initiative that originated in Ahmedabad and is now working globally for women empowerment. SEWA’s founder Elaben Bhatt is awarded by Ramon Magsaysay award for her contribution towards women empowerment.
